Every person who sells health insurance must be licensed in the state where you live. Checking takes a couple of minutes.
Step 1: Get the agent's details
Ask for their full name and National Producer Number (NPN). Licensed agents can give it to you on the spot.
Licensed agents compare plans from several carriers, check your doctors and estimate your subsidy. Free to you.

Each state insurance regulator offers a way to look up licensed producers, either on its own website or through the national lookup that many states use. Search by name or NPN.
Step 3: Check the line of authority
For health coverage, look for an Accident and Health (or Accident and Health or Sickness) line of authority or your state's equivalent, and confirm the license is active.
Step 4: Ask about marketplace certification
To enroll you in a subsidized plan, the agent also needs to be registered with HealthCare.gov or your state's marketplace for the current plan year.
Something wrong?
If an agent isn't licensed or acted improperly, contact your state's insurance department. Each state page on this site links to the regulator.
